RESILIENCE LEADERS: THE LOCAL SPONSORS OF THE 100% COMMUNITY INITIATIVE
The 100% Community initiative is a new program of the Dona Ana County Resilience Leaders, a coalition that was established in early 2018 by Las Cruces City Councilor Kasandra Gandara. Resilience Leaders is focused on the data-driven and cross-sector prevention of childhood trauma with participants working in one of ten task forces, focused on increasing access to the ten “survival” and “thriving” services shown to strengthen families. Focus areas include: behavioral health care, medical/dental care, food security, housing, transportation, parent supports, early child learning, community schools, youth mentoring and job training. Resilience Leaders participants include elected local lawmakers, organization leaders and community change agents.
About the designers of the 100% Community initiative
Leaders in the data-driven prevention of childhood trauma, Dr. Katherine Ortega Courtney and Dominic Cappello met while working at child protective services in Santa Fe, New Mexico. In the wake of a high-profile child fatality in the state, they wrote Anna, Age Eight: The data-driven prevention of childhood trauma and maltreatment. The groundbreaking book led to a bi-partisan legislative campaign and the creation of the Anna, Age Eight Institute, which opened in July of 2019. Dr. Ortega Courtney and Cappello wrote the follow-up book 100% Community to guide local leadership in every county in their work designing trauma-free and truly family-friendly cities and towns. The Institute’s ground-breaking work is leading a national movement to ensure safe and successful childhoods.
