EXCERPT FROM THE PREFACE OF 100% Community
Preface: We’re ready
You have the capacity to do something profound. You’ve seen how despite torrents of information and best intentions, we have yet to ensure that every child thrives. We know it’s the right thing to do. We know how to do it. Yet we have not not come together to make it so.
A quick online search reveals millions upon millions of results:
Children are our first priority: 339,000,000
Adverse Childhood Experiences: 27,700,000
Prevention of adverse childhood experiences: 8,200,000
Data-driven and cross-sector prevention of ACEs: 32,800,000
Childhood trauma: 158,000,000
Foundations ending child abuse: 31,000,000
Child welfare services: 773,000,000
Elected officials committed to children’s health: 84,800,000
Oprah Winfrey reports on childhood trauma: 1,340,000
Children are the future: 2,540,000,000
With all the information we have at our fingertips, we ask one question: What percentage of our children are you comfortable dooming to a life of trauma, despair and hopelessness?
If your answer was anything other than 0%, this book is not for you. At least not now.
This book is written for people who already believe that 100% of our children can thrive and deserve a life that is healthy, safe and filled with opportunities for education and success.
To turn that belief into reality, each community will have to face two colliding and inter-related challenges: 1) childhood and family trauma and 2) social adversities.
We’ve spent years advocating for the creation of family-focused and child-centered communities that have the services and values to prevent adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and the trauma, substance misuse and mental health challenges that accompany them.
We also have worked to help communities address and eliminate social adversities that come in the form of under-resourced schools and lack of access to health care or job training programs that prepare our young for the job market.
We must empower youth and adults to not only acknowledge their trauma, but also to seek out support in addressing its impact on their physical and emotional health, capacity to learn and, eventually, become a parent. We also must ensure that support is easily available in all communities in every county.
Our list of top vital services won’t surprise middle- and upper- class readers, as we use these services all the time. But for large segments of each county across this nation, many of these things (stable housing, secure food, transport, etc.) that we take for granted are unavailable for a wide variety of reasons.
Our first five of the ten services are what we call survival services: behavioral health care; medical and dental care; housing; food; and transport to services. Our second batch are called services for thriving: parental supports; early childhood learning programs; family-centered schools; youth mentors; and job training and placement.
In short, we are working to move each of our fifty states from places of trauma and adversity to ones of resilience and success.
Our job and the goal of this book is to not only have our leaders say that all children’s lives matter, but to put that idea into action.
